What about the costs? They can be claimed for privately storing your items if accommodation is temporarily unavailable, you would not incur a cost if Defence organised the removal, and the chain of command agrees that it is reasonable to store your things.
That said, you may not be able to get storage. Defence will not usually pay for storage accommodation expenses if you move to another home in the same housing benefit location at your own cost. They also do not pay for self-storage if you choose to occupy living-in accommodation after choosing to live off-base. Defence will not pay to store household items you buy after your move.

Units are always secure
Once you move your items in before relocating to Canberra, you lock it, keep the key, and have access to it 365 days a year or when you change bases. Once you move things in, you get a unique access code that gives you access to the facility. This code disables the alarm on your unit upon entry and sets the alarm again when you exit.
All self-storage is invoiced month to month in advance, and you can change your space with no penalty for doing so. Give Rent a Space two weeks’ notice, and we will provide any unused rent; you won’t pay more than what you have used.
Every unit is individually alarmed; however, you will need to lock it with a padlock and Rent a Space does not keep keys. You are free to bring your own padlock or purchase one from our store.

- Trailers are only available to use within the Sydney metro area for transporting your goods to our facilities
- All trailers must be returned before the close of business on the same day. Using it overnight is not permitted.
- Any damage or loss during the hire period is your responsibility and must be paid in full
- All road tolls, fines or penalties while using the trailer are at your expense
- A signed trailer form is required prior to use

Flexible insurance cover
If it’s worth storing, it is well-worth insuring. Rent a Space helps you cover the contents of your storage space with insurance.
Some home and content’s insurers may extend their coverage to your goods whilst in storage, but in the event they don’t, we distribute a self-storage insurance policy issued by GSA Insurance Brokers for you to consider.
Customise the policy based on the cover you require and have the flexibility to modify the policy value from time to time if circumstances change. If you choose not to insure your goods through the policy offered by Rent a Space or another insurer, you are electing to self-insure. This means you accept full responsibility for any loss or damage to your goods while they are in storage.
