Moving to Sydney

October 24, 2016

Sydney is known for its beautiful beaches, spectacular national parks, iconic structures such as the Harbour Bridge and Opera House and temperate climate. However, there’s more to the city than its casual laid-back lifestyle. Good public transport systems, efficient healthcare facilities and the high standard of education, make Sydney an attractive prospect for those looking to relocate to Sydney for study, work or family.

Below are some things you should know about Sydney before moving here.

Housing

Visit www.realestate.com.au or www.domain.com.au (either to rent or buy).

There are a number of serviced apartments available in Sydney for short-term accommodation while you look for a permanent place to stay. Alternatively, you can also check out AirBnB.com, Wotif.com, or Gumtree.com.au.

Relocation consultants are also available to help you find a home. Their local experience can come in handy, as they can provide you with more information on local schools, transport, shopping centres etc. They will also research rental options and make appointments of homes for you to view. They can also assist you with the application process.

Shipping your household goods from overseas

There are two options available – air or sea.

If you only have a small number of items to bring into Australia, you could consider sending them air-freight, or taking them as part of your checked-in baggage allowance.

If you are moving all your household items, the only viable option is sea-freight. All your household items will be packed into a container, which is then loaded onto a ship and transported to Australia.

Please note that all shipments entering Australia are subject to a government quarantine inspection which is carried out by AQIS.

No passport required – multicultural eats in Sydney

Explore Sydney’s diverse network of suburbs and enjoy authentic food and flavours from across the globe – from Malaysian hawker food, to Lebanese charcoal chicken, the city is home to a wide array of amazing cuisines.

Visit Auburn for Middle Eastern food, Cabramatta for Vietnamese or Harris Park for Indian. Visit Leichhardt, Sydney’s little Italy with some of the city’s best Italian restaurants and cafes or Fairfield for Thai, Lao and Iraqi food. The list is endless!

A great place to raise a family

There are many recreational parks and nature reserves in and around the city, including Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, Royal National Park and Lane Cove National Park. You can also feed cockatoos, lorikeet parrots and eels at the Royal Botanic Gardens, enjoy a picnic at Centennial Park or take a clifftop coastal walk from Bondi to Coogee.

Australia also has a worldwide reputation for academic excellence and offers internationally recognised qualifications with immediate employment and career development opportunities.

Medical

The Australian Health system is regarded as one of the best in the world. The public health system, Medicare, is available to all Australian citizens, permanent residents and overseas visitors who come from countries that have a reciprocal health care agreement with Australia.

Private health insurance is encouraged to supplement the public health system and there are associated tax benefits. Anyone who wants to work/live or study in Australia must have private health cover before the visa is issued.
